Symposium of Brazilian Medicinal Plants
The Simpósio de Plantas Medicinais do Brasil (SPMB) will celebrate its 40th year in 2008, when helding its XXth edition. The First SPMB actually happened in 1967, in São Paulo, Brazil, organized by J.R. Magalhães, E.A. Carlini and A. Kramer, and was presided over by Prof. H. Moussatché. The two following SPMB editions were also held in São Paulo, with the same organizers and presided respectively by Professors K. Silberschmidt (II SPMB, 1968) and Prof. Walter B. Moors (III SPMB, 1969). Three years latter, in 1972, the IV SPMB was organized by Professors E.A. Carlini and J.R. do Valle.
After 1972 the SPMB only reappeared in 1978 (V SPMB), again organized by Professors E.A. Carlini and J.R. do Valle in São Paulo. In this Symposium it was decided that SPMB would be held biannually, at places to be defined in each edition. Since then, SPMB has occurred in a regular fashion, rotating in organization and cities, but every 5 editions (10 years) returning to São Paulo. The cities and principal organizers of the 14th editions were as follows:

Finally, in 2008, the Symposium of Brazilian Medicinal Plants will return to the city of São Paulo, under the presidency of Professor E.A.Carlini, the original founder of this Symposium. It will be held jointly with the X International Congress of Ethnopharmacology, under the local coordination of Prof. Elaine Elisabetsky. It will be therefore a commemorative edition and an excellent opportunity to recall past editions and verify the advances that since occurred in medicinal plant research.

International Congress of Ethnopharmacology
The International Society of Ethnopharmacology was founded in Strasbourg, in 1990. The biannual International Congress of Ethnopharmacology (ICE) have been held as follow
s:

  • I ICE Strasbourg, France, 5-9 June, 1990
  • II ICE Uppsala, Sweden, 2-4 July, 1992
  • III ICE Beijing, China, 6-10 September, 1994
  • IV ICE (joint Congress with Society for Economic Botany), London, G-B, 1-6 July, 1996
  • V ICE (joint congress with the Society for Medicinal Plant Research), Zurich, Switzerland, 3-7 September, 2000
  • VI Building Bridges with Traditional Knowledge II (joint summit with the Society for Economic Botany), Honolulu, Hawai'i, 28 May -1 June, 2001
  • VII ICE (joint congress with South African Society of Botanists), Pretoria, South Africa, 8-11 January, 2003
  • VIII ICE (joint congress with the Society of Ethnobiology and the Society for Economic Botany), Canterbury, UK, 13-17 June, 2004
  • IX ICE Nanning, China, 22-25 August, 2006

It is therefore with great pleasure that we will bring this next ICE to Latin American for the first time, and have the opportunity to interact with the participants of the active community of medicinal plant research that congregate with the Simpósio Brasileiro de Plantas Medicinais.
